Dr. H. Dunbar Hoskins, Jr. is an internationally recognized glaucoma specialist emeritus, with over 80 publications and 350 professional lectures to his credit. As the Executive Vice President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) for 16 years, Dr. Hoskins oversaw the world's largest organization of ophthalmologists. In 2009, in his honor, the AAO opened the H. Dunbar Hoskins, Jr., MD Center for Quality Eye Care to promote accessibility to and appropriateness of eye care services.

Dr. Hoskins is also the former chairman of St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco, former chairman on the Board of Mercy Services Corp., founder and Chairman of Medicom Corporation, founding director of the American Glaucoma Society, founding director of the Glaucoma Research Foundation, former secretary-treasurer of the Pan-American Association of ophthalmology, and former member of the International Council of Ophthalmology. Dr. Hoskins is a retired Lieutenant Commander in the United States Naval Reserve.

The son of an ophthalmologist, Dr. Hoskins attended the Medical College of Virginia and was certified in ophthalmology in 1970. He did his glaucoma specialty training at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), under glaucoma pioneer Dr. Robert N. Shaffer, whose private practice he joined in 1972. He is a Clinical Professor Emeritus in ophthalmology at UCSF and co-author of the 6th edition of the quintessential text on glaucoma, Becker-Shaffer's Diagnosis and Therapy of the Glaucomas. He earned a lifetime achievement award from the AAO in 2003.

Dr. Hoskins' belief in patient-centered care drove his research and his clinical practice for over 45 years. His distinguished career included research into improving the treatment - and therefore the lives - of people living with glaucoma as well as preventing blindness. His areas of interest have covered the gamut of glaucoma diagnosis and treatment, including medications, laser applications, surgical methods, diagnostic technology, and the treatment of childhood glaucomas.
